Our Fonio flour is made 100% with Fonio from West Africa. Fonio is a plant-based, gluten-free, non-gmo food that is very similar to rice flour but much more nutritious.
Fonio is a nutritious cuisine dating back centuries. Pronounced phone-yo, this 5,000-year-old super grain is indigenous to West Africa and said to be so ancient, it was discovered by archeologists in Egyptian pyramids. Served to royalty, chiefs, at special occasions & ancestral celebrations; Fonio is a food loved by many because of its nutritional benefits.
Fonio has a rich very slight nutty flavor and a texture much smaller than quinoa and couscous. Fonio flour is comparable to rice flour but more nutritious. Also called ‘seed of the universe’ in parts of Africa, Fonio thrives where no other crop does with strong deep roots and resilience you can get from our fonio flour.
