The Katjes story began in 1910, when Xaver Fassin brought home a licorice recipe to Germany from Sicily. Xaver eventually shared the recipe with his son, Klaus, who began experimenting with forming the licorice into small black cats. By 1950, the cats had caught on and Klaus went into business manufacturing them with the help of his friends and family. Katjes brand, and the licorice cat, have since become icons in the licorice world.
