About the Brand

Just Born is a family-owned candy manufacturer that has been in business for more than seven decades and three generations. They make everyone's favorite candies: Mike and Ike, Hot Tamales, Zours, Teenee Beanee Gourmet Jelly Beans, and seasonal Marshmallow Peeps.

Founder Sam Born
The Just Born candy tradition was conceived in 1910, when Sam Born immigrated to the United States from Russia. A candy maker by trade, Born was also ingenious in the use of technology. Inventing chocolate sprinkles, known as jimmies, and the hard chocolate coating on ice cream bars. In 1916, Born was given the keys to the city of San Francisco for inventing a machine that mechanically inserted sticks into lollipops.

Born opened a small candy-making and retail store in Brooklyn, NY, in 1923. Ever the entrepreneur, he proudly displayed in his store window an evolving line of daily-made candy, marketing its freshness in a sign that declared "just born." The original company logo showed a baby resting in a candy measuring scale. Soon after opening the Brooklyn store, Born invited his brothers-in-law, Irv and Jack Shaffer, to join him to market and sell his confections. The company thrived in spite of the Depression, and in 1932, Just Born moved its operations to an empty printing factory in Bethlehem, Penn.

The popular Mike and Ike candies were introduced in 1940.
Mike and Ike fruit-flavored chewy candies were introduced in 1940. Hot Tamales were introduced a decade later. Just Born also grew significantly over the years through acquisitions, including the acquistion of the Rodda Candy Company of Lancaster, Penn., known for its jelly bean technology but also for its small line of marshmallow products, including a popular three-dimensional marshmallow Easter Peep was made by laboriously hand-squeezing marshmallow through pastry tubes. Fortunately, Born's son Bob, who had joined the company in 1946 and who inherited his father's inventive spirit, helped to mechanize the marshmallow-forming process. Today the company produces more than 4.2 million Marshmallow Peeps each day.

Just Born candies are now available to more than 1.5 billion people world-wide.
